HOW ADVANTIX WORKS
Advantix is a product resulting from the combination of two ingredients: Imidacloprid-known for its rapid action on fleas-and permethrin, a pyrethroid known for its effectiveness. The two substances, acting together, cause Imidacloprid to increase the effectiveness of permethrin.
The product providesrepellent activity against ticks, phlebotomus and mosquitoes, thus preventing the parasites from biting and thus reducing the risk of transmission of vector-borne dog diseases such as for example borreliosis, rickettsiosis, ehrlichiosis and leishmaniasis. In addition, the product provides repellent activity against the horse fly, thus aiding in the prevention of fly-bite dermatitis.
Imidacloprid is an ectoparasiticide belonging to the class of chloronicotinyl compounds.
Chemically, it can be classified as a chloronicotinylnitroguanidine. Imidacloprid is effective against adult fleas and the larval stages of fleas. In addition to the adulticidal efficacy against fleas of Imidacloprid, larvicidal efficacy has been demonstrated in the environment surrounding the treated pet.
Larval stages present in the dog's surroundings are killed following contact with a treated animal. Imidacloprid possesses a high affinity for nicotinergic receptors for acetylcholine in the postsynaptic region of the central nervous system (CNS) of insects. The resulting inhibition of cholinergic transmission leads in insects to paralysis and death of the pest.
Permethrin belongs to the class of type I pyrethroid acaricides and insecticides and also acts as a repellent. Pyrethroids affect the voltage-dependent sodium channels of vertebrates and invertebrates.
Pyrethroids are so-called "open channel blockers" and affect the sodium channel by slowing both its activation and inactivation properties, thus leading to hyperexcitability and death of the pest.
